National Dog Day

Today is National Dog Day, a day where here at Plants Not Pills CBD we honor our favorite 4 legged friends.

What’s special about this day in particular?

For starters, National Dog Day raises awareness for the 3.3 million dogs who enter national shelters annually and are in need of adoption. According to the American Veterinary Association, there are enough dogs available for adoption for all Americans who want a dog.

However, statistics show a positive trend in animal rescue. A nationwide increase in awareness of rescue animals has resulted in a decrease in the total amount of animals (cats and dogs) placed in shelters- from 7.2 million in 2011 to 6.5 million in 2017.

In addition to dogs in need of homes, National Dog Day also recognizes the thousands of dogs in America who are working as guide and law enforcement dogs. The responsibilities these incredible animals include searching for drugs and explosives, locating missing people and uncovering crime scene evidence. The training of these dogs is a lengthy process and these animals undergo several intensive obedience tests to qualify for this arduous and often dangerous work.

Among the most popular breeds used in law enforcement are German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois and Bloodhounds.

Though also considered working dogs, Guide Dogs for the visually impaired are trained much differently. Typically, they begin their training at 15-17 months old, when they begin learning the most important concept of being a guide dog: intelligent disobedience

Intelligent disobedience is when a dog is trained to go against instructions. Later on, guide dogs will use this knowledge to help “disobey” their visually impaired owners in case they are wanting to cross intersections when there is oncoming traffic or walking into potentially dangerous obstacles.

Even if our dogs are not out in the world leading the visually impaired or solving crime, but simply lying on the couch next to us, they’re still saving our lives. According to research published in Scientific Reports, dog owners are less likely to die from cardiovascular disease and have a longer life expectancy than non-dog owners (it’s all those walks!). In addition, dogs help us combat loneliness, depression and anxiety, three of the leading factors associated with mental health issues in America.

Supplementing CBD for Dog’s Health and Wellness

For all that our dogs do for us, the least we can do for them is keep them healthy and happy. In addition to lots of exercise, cuddles and a diet rich in protein and nutrients, many pet owners are discovering the benefits of CBD oil for their dogs’ health conditions.

CBD oil can help dogs suffering from a wide variety of health issues, including anxiety, cancer, epilepsy, osteoarthritis and seizures. As the canine endocannabinoid system is very similar to those of humans, but more sensitive, dogs can enjoy the benefits of CBD at lower doses than humans.

Here at Plants Not Pills CBD, we offer a variety of hemp derived CBD products for your dog. Our organically cultivated, all natural THC Free Calmation oil comes in two different dosages- 100 mg and 250 mg along with dosage instructions based on your pet’s weight. With its natural bacon flavoring, it can be easily and discreetly introduced into your dog’s food. Another alternative form of administering CBD to your dog is with Wild Ones,  our beef flavored pet chews, each of which contains 60 mg of CBD and can be given to your dog to relieve anxiety before a visit to the groomers or long travels. If you are concerned about your dog’s dry or cracked paws, dry skin, fungal infections or bug bites, we also carry a topical salve called Alivor made with 60 mg of organically cultivated CBD and all organic ingredients such as beeswax, shea butter and olive oil.
