Arthritis and CBD: A Perfect Pair for Arthritis Awareness Month
Benefits of CBD for Arthritis
Perhaps no single health condition is as prevalent as arthritis, an ailment that affects over 54 million American adults. In commemoration of May, Arthritis Awareness Month, we take a closer look at this multi-faceted affliction and how cannabidiol (CBD) can relieve the debilitating pain and uncomfortable symptoms associated with arthritis.
What is Arthritis?
The term “arthritis” is used to describe severe pain and stiffness in a joint or joints, the place where two or more bones meet. There are several different kinds of arthritis with the most common being osteoarthritis followed by rheumatoid arthritis and gout.
Osteoarthritis is the direct result of aging. As we get older, the cartilage that acts as a protective layer at the end of our bones thins and breaks, depriving our joints of much needed lubrication. Though the body will try to repair itself and create more tissue, our joint structure inevitably changes. Extra bone can form as a result as well as excess fluid. This leads to inflammation and increased stiffness and pain for the sufferer.
Inflammation is also a key factor in both rheumatoid arthritis and gout. Though environmental and genetic factors play a large role in determining the severity of arthritic pain, high sugar and fat diets as well as excessive alcohol consumption are known to exacerbate inflammation and subsequent pain. In fact, gout was historically known as the “king’s disease” or “rich man’s disease” due to its prevalence among those who could afford excess, lifestyle changes are often recommended as a first line treatment.
Traditionally, treatment of arthritis has been pharmaceutical based ranging from over the counter anti-inflammatory medications to prescription opioids. Over the past decade, with increasing acceptance of the anti-inflammatory benefits of medical cannabis, forward thinking physicians and patients are turning away from pharmaceuticals to cannabidiol (CBD).
Cannabidiol (CBD) and Arthritis
With its anti-inflammatory benefits and potent anti-arthritic effects that protect joints, CBD can limit the progression of arthritis and oateoarthritis (Malfait, et al., 2000), (Jamontt et al, 2010) THC has been determined to have anti-inflammatory effects and has demonstrated effectiveness at fighting inflammation of the joints (Kelly et al, 2016). In addition, THC helps manage pain from joint diseases (Burston, et al., 2013). CBC has also demonstrated itself as an effective anti-inflammatory agent, suggesting it could assist with inflammatory-related conditions like arthritis or cardiovascular disease (Wirth, et al., 1980) and (DeLong, Wolf, Poklis & Lichtman, 2010). Inflammation reduction was shown without interacting with the endocannabinoid CB2 receptors, suggesting a synergistical effect of CBC with other cannabinoids. The current model of this molecular interaction and receptor sensitisation between CBC, CBD and THC, shows a potentiating effect producing an even greater anti-inflammatory response (Izzo, et al., 2012).
